Taking in the Neighborhood

A crane flies by
     the No Trespassing sign --
But we're claimed by some flag,
     a sports team or crime.
The shrubs are shaved with knives
     to pyramids and crystal balls
Like they would prefer it
     to some naked state,
As if it helps us live our lives
     with others.

The weeds have gone to seed
like a judgment in the back
Of our minds. The world
     cannot be genuine,
It must be remade, as we must be,
     into a dream.
