Night Songs by Hölderlin: Embarrassment

Are you not aware of many living beings?
Does your foot not touch on true things, as on carpets?
          Thus, my genius, step purely
Into life, and do not worry!

All that happened to you was serendipitous!
It all is rhymed with joy, or else how could it, heart,
Offend you, how else could it
Meet you where you’re supposed to be?

For the heavenly are as humans, lonely beasts,
And the celestials themselves lead the retreat
          Into singing and the lord’s
Choir, in accord with the style,

So too go we, the people’s tongues, since we too like
Life, where much is joined, joyful and proportionate,
Open to all, so it is
For our Father, the heaven God,

Who gives the day to poor and rich to reflect on,
And at the turn of time holds those who pass this way
          Straightened in golden apron
Strings, as if He's holding children.

And we are good, in return, and deftly dispatch
Something when we come, with the art that is brought by
          The heavenly. But it’s we
               Who bring the corresponding hands.

Was geschiehet, es sei alles gelegen dir!
Sei zur Freude gereimt, oder was könnte denn
          Dich beleidigen, Herz, was

          Aufgerichtet an goldnen

Doch selber
               Bringen schickliche Hände wir.
