Where are you? My soul is drunk at the dawn
In your bliss; for it exists,
What I see, like his
weary
Ride,
the gorgeous young god,
Curls bathed in golden clouds; even now
My eyes still gaze by themselves on him;
But he is far away,
with the pious people
Who
honor him still, the disregarded.
I love you, earth! You grieve with me!
And our mourning walk, as children of
pain,
Asleep, and as the
winds
Flutter
and whisper the play of strings,
Until his master's fingers coax the finer tone,
So mist and dreams will play to us,
Until the beloved comes
again and
Life
and spirit, in us, ignites.

Dem Sonnengott
Wo bist du? trunken dämmert die Seele mir
Von aller deiner
Wonne; denn eben ists,
Daß ich gesehn,
wie, müde seiner
Fahrt, der
entzückende Götterjüngling
Die jungen Locken badet' im Goldgewölk;
Und jetzt noch
blickt mein Auge von selbst nach ihm;
Doch fern ist er
zu frommen Völkern,
Die ihn noch
ehren, hinweggegangen.
Dich lieb' ich, Erde! trauerst du doch mit mir!
Und unsre Trauer
wandelt, wie Kinderschmerz,
In Schlummer
sich, und wie die Winde
Flattern und
flüstern im Saitenspiele,
Bis ihm des Meisters Finger den schönern Ton
Entlockt, so
spielen Nebel und Träum' um uns,
Bis der Geliebte
wiederkömmt und
Leben und
Geist sich in uns entzündet.
