Record Store

What passes for old in California
– Saturday Night at Mickie Finn’s
Sidewalk vinyl in prime OC space,
There’s Whistling Jack Smith,
An Evening with Julian Dream,
“Revenge Will Come,” The Best of Judy
Canova, and Slovenly Riposte still in
Shrinkwrap, and like a diamond behind
A opaque liner, Lonely Woman by Julie London.
Thousands of records, probably unplayable,
PDQ Bach and Peter Nero,
Billy Vaughan and Glenn Yarborough,
As if one is buying not music but access
To the closets of a generation lost in a time
When all that was good still existed,
Even though these are the reasons they dreamed
Of an earlier age as utopia.
Ferrante and Teicher’s Midnight Cowboy
It’s enough to say we exist.
