We Live in Many Lives

From the Portuguese of Ricardo Reis (Fernando Pessoa)

We live in many lives;
I think or feel, ignoring
Who is thinking or feeling.
I'm just the place
Of feelings or thoughts.

I have more souls than one.
There are more selves than I myself.
I exist, nevertheless,
Indifferent to the rest.
I shut them up: I talk.

The crossed impulses
Of what I feel or do not feel
Compete as to who I am.
Ignore them. Nothing
That does know dictates: I write.
