The Children of Baltimore

Electric sunset
on floating mountain cathedrals:
I never thought
the way light was
redefined by cloud
that darkness could cling so
and stay unexamined
while its plumes were described
from hillsides daubed
in their swagger.

The children of Baltimore
can't move as these clouds do,
the thing they never knew
rides like a thumb
their saddlehorn vistas—
nothing to escape from,
only escaping
further under the sun's masks.
