The Invitation

For Paul

Why explain myself to the world
When I can explain the world to myself?
Why belong inside a group
When a group can belong inside of me?

From communities to schools to universities
I've learned the hard way:
I don't know what others don't know,
And someone has the food, so I must please them.

Falling away, it's so easy to see:
I've always known what God knows,
Sustenance abounds,
Life puts flowers inside my mouth.

Ach, how deep it goes,
The gold that shines up everything that reflects it
As if it were a sun
Producing, not possessing light,

While I, invisible in gold's vast hypnotic field
Stand larger, bowing to the sun.
