from Sonnets to Orpheus, Part I, 19

Translation of Rainer Maria Rilke

Although the world changes itself
As rapidly as clouds
All that is completed falls
Home to the ages old.

Over the change and course,
Further and more freely
You're still protected before you sing,
God within the lyre.

Never has suffering been recognized
Neither has love been learned
And what in death removes us

Is not unveiled as yet
Only the song above the land
Hallows and praises.
